It is paramount and vital that everybody learns how to identify errors in written scripts or work.  More so, it is critical that you identify and know the proofreading marks that you can use to correct the error.   We will look at some of the proofreading marks that are commonly used to assist you to know how they are used.  To start with, proofreading aims at identifying mistakes or errors that could be present in a script or written work. Well, the most important marks are those that point out to critical issues such as capitalization, punctuation and spelling errors.

Well, when it comes to punctuation marks, there are marks that can assist in pointing out missing quotation marks, commas, periods as well as apostrophes and other marks.  Most teachers use the caret to address such punctuation mistakes. The symbol is triangle- like and can point either upwards or downwards depending with what error is being referred to.  For the downward caret, it is an indication that one needs to add or include an apostrophe or quotation mark into the written work.  The caret is usually placed just above the words pointing downwards to where the punctuation is missing.  For the upward caret, it indicates the need to include insertions such as comma, semicolons, and colons in your work.  It is thus put beneath the words where correction is required.  For periods, there is a different symbol, which is a circle.  For the best proofreaders, visit this website or go here for more proofreading tips.

Where a period is required, a circle is added to indicate the need for correction.  However, a circle can be used to indicate that something else is missing in the sentence.
When it comes to misspelled words, it can be either you have miswritten a word or have written it twice.  In such case, the letters 'sp' are written over the place the correction is required.  A teacher can also indicate a spelling mistake by circling the misspelled words and also write the letters sp.  At times, also, you can write words in the wrong or unintended order. The transposed words symbol can be used to indicate that the words have been written in the wrong order.  A line is drawn over the first word and extends under the second one.  There is also a word that can be used to indicate that a word needs to be deleted.  A teacher can use a line but loosely drawn and with a loop in it, looks like a shoelace.   Continue reading more on this here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/ruth-starkman/how-to-best-use-writing-a_b_8167658.html.
